BRAD WOODFIN

THE HOLY GOATS

November 25th to December 13th, 2009
Opening Reception
Saturday November28th, 2pm to 4pm

Jacana Contemporary Art Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of new work by artist Brad Woodfin. In his latest body of work, Woodfin pays homage to one of the first animals domesticated by man, the goat.

As with previous work, Woodfin’s animals emerge from a dark, rich canvas provoking an eerie and strange contemplation.  New to this work is the addition of a golden sourced light that transforms the goats into pastoral godly beasts.

The individual goat portraits tell a story steeped in historical reference, drawing on classical and Greek mythological tradition. The story of Pan with his goat legs, Bacchus leading the satryrs and the devil himself.

Woodfin’s goats appear to have stumbled upon the viewer, timourous yet imbued with an appreciation of the darker things. Still others are to be found in a clinical stance almost trembling, exposed to the scrutiny of the viewer. In contrast Woodfin has included portraits on found objects; book covers from classical literature. Strangely humorous and potent in their reference the goats invite us to read and understand them as a narrative.
