DRAW ME A SHEEP, STUDY AFTER LAND SCAPE

"What makes the desert beautiful," says the little prince, "is that somewhere it hides a well."

-Antoine de Saint-Exupery, The Little Prince

Jacana Contemporary Art Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of new work by artist Mohsen Khalili. Comprised of paintings depicting fanciful and artificial landscapes Khalili is a controlled and deliberate storyteller.

Rather than interpret the natural, Khalili's scapes could be the visions of a hallucinating man left alone in the desert as some believe the story of the Little Prince to be; constantly questioning the world around him indicating that the search is the reward in experience rather than the attainment of answers.

In these new works Khalili shifts his attention away from his familiar subject matter of the physicality of life; pain, death, fear and insecurity. Instead he focuses on the stillness, the beauty.

The details within each painting are fragmented kaleidoscopes. There is anticipation, a day dreaming.
